STEM K’Nex Day

by Abbey McKenna, Year 9

The STEM day on Thursday 14th June gave us an opportunity to learn more about STEM whilst competing in a series of challenges.  We started with an easy one, building a tractor from the K’Nex pieces provided. Our next task was to build a bridge to hold the largest weight possible.  We had to rely on creativity and the knowledge of what makes a bridge successful to create our masterpieces.  Many groups used triangles for weight distribution or flat platforms for the weights to sit on, with the winning bridges holding over 3500g.

The final task was by far the toughest.  We had to construct a vehicle and attach a motor to enable it to pull the most amount of weights.  Some people decided to put two motors in for more power whereas others opted for one motor and a heavier body to increase the drag.  The most amount of weights carried was 200g and numerous cars carried no weights at all.

We had a stimulating experience that was fun and enjoyable!  It allowed us to learn more about STEM whilst having a great time.
