Advent Mass

by Michael Thompson, Chaplain

On Tuesday, December 18th, almost 450 students from across our seven year groups gathered in the Sports Hall for our annual Advent End-of-Term Mass. We welcomed Fr. Chris Hughes from the parish of St. Cuthbert’s & St. Joseph’s, who celebrated for us.

We had artwork from our Year 9 students, readers from Year 11 and fantastic musicians from Year 7 right up to Year 13. We also were also treated to a German carol, “Leise rieselt der Schnee”, which was led by our STM Culture Club!

Fr. Chris spoke passionately about how Christmas is for each and every one of us in the messiness and difficulties of our lives. He described the Christmas story from the point of view of the shepherds, who would have been low down in society, yet were called to follow the star and visit the baby Jesus. We are all called to be like the shepherds – to humble ourselves in front of God and lay down our baggage at the foot of the manger.

We had a fantastic celebration and it was a wonderful way to end what has been a very, busy and tiring term for all!
