Feast Day of St Thomas More

By Michael Thompson, School Chaplain

Last month, we joyfully celebrated the life and work of 30 years of our school community on the eve of St. Thomas More’s feast day. The event, which took place at Our Lady & St. Columba, Wallsend, began with the celebration of Mass where we reflected on the theme ‘Called to Serve’. The liturgy was infused with student participation, from our wonderful gathering of student singers to readers of the word and bidding prayers. We had Year 10 artists whose faith-based pieces were displayed in the church and Year 8 dancers who brought the Mass to a close. We were also truly blessed to have all five of our Partnership clergy represented at the Mass, which was celebrated by Fr. David Smith.

After Mass, the 700-strong congregation piled out onto the parish concourse where we shared in a barbecue, a bouncy castle, face painting and even sumo suits! More importantly, there was an opportunity for the many students there that night to talk about the exciting things they have been involved with at St. Thomas More RC Academy this year.

A huge thank you for all those who came along – students, parents, staff, governors, parishioners, clergy, younger brothers and sisters… it was fantastic evening where our students shone with the glorious sunshine. We look forward to celebrating again next year!
