Northumbria puts us through our paces

By Cameron Hales-Owen

Informative, influential and engaging is how I would describe my day at Northumbria University. The activities were not only educational but a fantastically fun experience! One of the first things I noticed was how vast the University is, and I thought our school was big!

After arriving, we were swiftly briefed on what we’d be doing, and glad to hear for the first hour, the sports hall would be turned into a dodgeball battlefield, teacher against student, with balls flying in all directions.

A quick walk to the Gym and straight into a professional athlete’s energetic strength and conditioning session. Immediately heading on to the sprint tracks, we tested our limits and learned how to improve our running techniques.

The boxing ring awaited our fate next, as an amateur boxer eyed up the fresh-faced competition.  A quick session to brush up on our stance and sparring skills and then it was time to put those skills to the test.

Lunchtime saw us watching another of Northumbria’s sports teams perform.  This time Badminton, as they battled against a rival university.  As our final activity of the day we were led to one of the many classrooms and learned how the university manages good nutrition for their athletes, including how you’d need to cook if you were an athlete.

This experience truly was remarkable and I would encourage anyone to do this as it’s given me an insight to what my future may look like.
