Young Carers

Young Carers at St. Thomas More

A young carer refers to a child or youth aged 5 to 18 who assists in caring for a family member experiencing disabilities, illnesses, mental health challenges, or substance misuse. Their responsibilities may include tasks like grocery shopping, meal preparation, household chores, looking after younger siblings, medication management, personal care assistance, and providing companionship. Many young carers express concerns about the well-being of their cared-for person and often feel the need to check on them regularly.

At St. Thomas More Catholic High School, we offer support and guidance to young carers and their families. We provide an environment for them to discuss their caregiving roles, address any worries they might have, and offer referrals to the North Tyneside Carers’ Centre when necessary. Parents interested in referring their child as a young carer can reach out to their child’s class teacher or contact Mrs. Green, our designated Young Carers’ Lead, for further assistance.
