St Thomas More Academy prepared to celebrate World Book Day on March 1st, however due to severe weather, activities had to be postponed until March 9th as the school was forced to close.
After interviewing Miss Edwards, the school librarian, she explained there would continue to be activities to celebrate World Book Day. These included: a drawing competition, a book swap and a treasure hunt plus many more activities for students to participate in.
World Book Day was first introduced on the 1st March 1997 in Catalonia, Spain. This tradition then spread across Europe and Africa, later North and South America and finally Oceania. It is a day to celebrate the importance of books!
Head of English, Mrs Warland, said, “World Book Day generates excitement in reading and encourages children to read, not just for the sake of reading but to read for enjoyment.”
On Friday 9th March, the library welcomed students from Key Stage 3 and encouraged them to take part in a range of activities. This year Key Stage 3 students held their nerve and beat the current record for the pencil tower tradition!
Money raised from World Book Day, will either be given to charity or put it towards the school library’s Easter challenge prizes.
