Year 13 Biologists visit Newcastle University

On Tuesday 19th September, a group of Year 13 Biology students attended a lecture and a workshop at the Newcastle University School of Biomedical Sciences. Students could choose from five different sessions, all designed to give a flavour of the degree courses offered by the University.

Erin Prior writes about her experience:

Recently, I attended the Sport and Exercise workshop at Newcastle University. It was very interesting and gave me an insight into what the course would include.  I was given the opportunity to participate in a carousel of sporting and biological activities. For example at one workshop we created our own isotonic drink, which we learnt have a similar concentration of salt and sugar as human body cells. They are needed by athletes to quickly replace the electrolytes and fluids lost during exercise. We were also taught the difference between isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic drinks, discovering when an athlete would use each. The active nature of these workshops made the day both enjoyable and educational.
