Year 7 Rugby County Cup champions

Connor Bowran and Lucas Rowell, Year 7

St Thomas More Year 7 rugby team travelled to Dame Allan’s School on the 31st of March for the County 7s competition.

We were put in a group with Bede Academy, Three Rivers Morpeth and The Royal Grammar School. The first game we played was against Three Rivers where we won 5-3. Secondly, we faced a good RGS team which ended in a 3-3 draw. Our final game was against Bede Academy who we convincingly defeated 7 tries to 1. Due to Three Rivers beating RGS, we progressed as group champions into the final group of four to compete for the County Cup, along with the other two group winners and the best runner up.

The teams in the final group were Kings Priory, Ponteland Middle School and RGS. The first game we played was a closely contested game with Ponteland Middle School, which we ended up winning 2-1. The next game was against Kings Priory, where we drew 2-2, meaning that a win against RGS would win us the County Cup.

The RGS went one try up early on in the game but we hit back with a try straight from the restart. In the second half we took control and made two quick breakthroughs putting us 3-1 up. In the final few minutes we sealed the win. This meant that we had won the Rugby County 7’s, an achievement that has never been done before by a St Thomas More Rugby team.
