All over by Christmas

Abbie Herron, Jake Fitzpatrick and Angela Pascua, Year 9

On the 2nd of December, ten Year 9 Historians were selected to participate in an exciting opportunity to go to the Durham Leadership Centre for an exclusive event called “All over by Christmas”, which focused on the first few months of the First World War.

We were given the chance to learn a lot about the causes of the war, as well as who was involved. Students had to use their historical and geographical knowledge to complete the tasks. French and German knowledge was also required, as we looked at sources from both sides of the trenches. Gabrielle and Bernard, both Ofsted inspectors, hosted the event and were very approachable, helpful and knowledgeable.

As Year 9 students will be learning about the First World War in the coming months, the outing has helped to boost our awareness of the causes of the First World War. In addition, it was an opportunity to interact with various other schools.  To further our understanding of the conditions of the First World War, we created a presentation to show what we had learnt at the event. With the time limit of one hour, we produced a factual poster, which was a challenge but tested our capabilities well. Overall, the day was very beneficial on a number of levels.
