Angels of the North 8th Annual Concert

by Lucy Penhall, Year 12

A sensational evening of the musical theatre entertainment sponsored by the leading north of England charity Angels of the North.” – Sage Gateshead

On Monday 27th November, a concert featuring the Bommel Musical Theatre group and a massed choir of over 400 primary school voices was held at Sage Gateshead for The Angels of the North charity. Many of the Bommel Musical Theatre group attend St Thomas More and several of our feeder schools.  A night of music, dance and fun was described as “A truly breath-taking concert.”  This is the eighth concert where Mr Stephane Bommel has teamed his musical theatre group with an everchanging massed choir of over 400 pupils from primary school choirs from all over the region.

Being part of the Bommel Musical Theatre group comes with many benefits – friendship, music, drama, dance.  In fact, the group have performed in London, Paris and New York!  But one of the main benefits is having the chance to perform more locally – on stage at Sage in front of a packed auditorium.  This privilege is shared with all those children who took part in the massed choir: they share our love of being on stage, singing and performing and for many of them, it is the first time they will have performed at such a venue and to such a large crowd.  In the performance on Monday 27th November, songs from Newsies, Matilda, Beauty and The Beast, and many other musicals were performed resulting in standing ovations.

Bommel Musical Theatre and St Thomas More would like to congratulate and thank the schools that took part (of which many are our own feeder schools) as their pupils really worked hard to make the show so special. So a massive thank you to the primary schools within Gateshead, North Tyneside and Newcastle.  We hope we’ll see many of you at the next one.
