Careers @ STM

by Mrs Merchant

This term there have been many opportunities to learn more about and gain an insight into careers in Law and Social Media Marketing. A group of Year 10 to 13 students attend a “Spark Careers” session with “gunnercooke” one of the UK’s fastest growing law firms. The live employer engagement session included a Q&A session with their Director, Corporate Partner, Associate Solicitor and Head of People and Development. Students were able to ask questions about career entry route, salaries, a typical day in the office and what it’s like to work in the Law sector. A second group of students again attended a “Sparks Careers” session investigating careers within the digital and social media marketing sector. They were able to engage with and ask questions of the panel. The live panel includes representatives within the sector from TikTok, Vodaphone, The Juice Academy, Lightbulb Media and gunnercooke. They talked about their careers in social media and digital marketing and answer live questions. If you would like to see some of these events or others which have taken place such as Midwifery,  Automative Careers with BMW and STEM careers in the Submarine services them please visit https://www.sparkcareers.org/employer-events.

Twenty Year 9 students attend a ‘Discover Uni’ Day on 17th of November at Newcastle University. With 100 places available, this event gave the Year 9 students the opportunity to experience Newcastle University campus for a day. They’ll also got the chance to find out more about university life, participate in a series of interactive work activities, enjoy a campus tour and chat with current university students. It gave our Year 9s their first real taste of university life, and began to help them map out their future after school or college.

This term a class of Year 9 budding entrepreneurs were given the chance to work with Natalie from Software City in Sunderland for an enterprise morning. They worked in teams to design and pitch a business idea for sustainability. The students gained an insight into challenges businesses are currently addressing. They built upon skills developing business plans, working together as a team, and presenting to one another. The winning teams will receive a private tour and demo at PROTO Gateshead – which is the first digital production facility of its kind in Europe. Created specifically for animators, film makers and games developers, offering 3D scanning, motion capture and sound recording in one unique place. PROTO which is owned and managed by Gateshead Council, it is part of the Digital Catapult NETV network, and is also home to the North East Tees Valley Immersive Lab (one of only four in the UK).
